Grommets and Eyelets are extremely similar in their appearance and function. The metal rings add reinforcement to holes and create a professional touch on printing jobs, large and small.
Eyelets
An Eyelet, similar to those found on shoes and boots, is a piece of metal that is bent around a hole to allow for hanging, binding or otherwise securing a piece. These are used in badges, cards, keychains, hanging door signs, hang tags or even ornaments which require a ribbon, string, keyring, wire or rope. Securing two or more pieces of paper together with the eyelet can create swatch books or movable figures. Eyelets also work well with hooks on double sided hanging posters. Document eyelets are used in folders for 3 ring binders, envelopes and other interesting bindery options. Eyelets can even be used in plastic, fabric, vinyl or almost any kind of paper.
Grommets
A Grommet is actually two pieces of metal that are secured to either side of a banner, tent or tarp to reinforce holes used to secure it with rope, cord or hooks. Hanging signs, such as vinyl banners require the additional support to ensure the holes don't rip in wind, while under tension or with prolonged use. Grommets can be used in fabric, vinyl and even rigid substrates to prevent tears and give an overall completed look.
Die cutting is an impressive way to give print pieces a unique and eye catching finishing cut or score, turning seemingly impossible jobs into gorgeous realities. You may know dielines are used in print files to dictate where the die will cut the piece, but do you know how they're made? How does a simple line in Illustrator become a die and ultimately the perfect shaped piece? Let us show you how to take a project through the entire process from concept and design to printing and finishing for a successful final piece.
At SunDance's Open House in 2015, we held a seminar called Die Making 101 which showed the entire process of actual production pieces. Creative Director Susanna Toppa lead the first half of the seminar with a focus on the pre-production aspects of design: how to set up dielines, paper choice, prototyping, required layout and dieline exporting to get the piece into production. Finishing Expert, Dave Leyrer then demonstrated how the dielines are cut into a die board and how the die rules are bent to shape. He then moved on to show a live job on the die cutter and let attendees fold the final product.
From the late 1800's until now, color lithography (from the Greek word "lithos," or stone) has been a process used by such artists as Pablo Picasso and Degas to produce - and reproduce - beautiful works of art.
SunDance's sister company, SunDance Graphics, continues this time-honored tradition using state-of-the-art offset press technology and the latest in digital output techniques, to create trend-conscious art prints for the home décor market. The art reproduction printing industry has incredibly rigorous standards, and we pride ourselves in our attention to detail and our ability to create pixel-perfect art. We are internationally known for our trend-conscious art, and our excellence in art reproduction has led to our finest standards for commercial work.
The SunDance Fine Art Print Catalog contains over 1,200 exclusive images from some of the world's top contemporary artists, as well as many prints from the Museum Masters and classical painters. We showcase beautifully crafted and brilliantly designed art that is sure to inspire and enhance.
DCRx, an established compounding pharmacy, was interested in shifting their brand image to focus more on customer-centered care. From that vision came Patient First, a pharmacy that puts patient care ahead of industry needs. Based on our success with some competitors in their market, they chose the Sundance team to bring their brand to life. Their goal was to have a look that felt bright, engaging and leave an impression. We decided to create an image that had a soft and caring touch that was approachable and made clients feel at ease. This carried over to their web presence as well. Our belief that employee engagement was as important as gaining clients, so we created an online store front that was user focused while keeping the company's core message and brand intact.
Our holiday bash at Sundance is quite a thing to behold. Being in marketing, it’s an opportunity for us to get creative and whip up a magical atmosphere while we mingle with co-workers, clients and loved ones. So when the VP and partner here at Sundance, John Ruggieri, opened his home for us to use for the party we knew what we had to do. You see, John is a bit of an outdoorsman at heart and has a deep love for the untamed wild. In fact, he owns acreage on a wildlife reserve in Kenya and has decorated his home to reflect that passion. So of course, we rolled with it!
Many files sent to us cannot be output exactly as delivered. File problems (ranging from missing fonts to incorrect page size to overprint issues) can result in anything from a minor inconvenience to delays, cost overruns, unanticipated proofing rounds, late-stage design changes or even unhappiness with a finished job.
The best way to avoid any issues is to factor in printing from the earliest possible point in the planning stage. Prepress doesn’t have to start when you deliver the file to us – it starts when you begin planning your project. Preparing printing specifications(specs) may seem like a distraction from actual designing, but if done early and correctly, we can become your best ally in making exactly the project you envision, on-spec, on-time and on-budget.
When in doubt, consult us! Our experienced and knowledgeable staff is always available to assist you with any questions you may have.
When it comes to our SunDance team, we believe that our employees have real insight into how our company can improve. With hands-on, day-to- day knowledge, we empower them to make improvements and offer solutions. We listen to and trust our employees when they bring an issue to us, so we can work together to create a solution.
SunDance takes pride in finding and retaining highly motivated, high-energy, talent. Our employees may come from other companies or even different industries. What is important to us is that we bring in highly motivated and skilled people who will help grow our business while adhering to our core goals. We understand that every member is essential to our success. SunDance values our part-time employees as much as our full-timers, and often transition our part-time team to full-time positions when the opportunity arises. Because we believe that company buy-in is essential, SunDance offers quarterly profit-sharing checks to employees—paying a meaningful percentage of year-to- date profits. These employee benefits and initiatives allow us to maintain incredibly low employee turnover.
Our goal is to attract and retain the top clients and employees. We are fully engaged from the top down, and as a result our employees bring the same dedication to their jobs. Being seen, heard and appreciated is essential to the culture at SunDance. We focus on the big picture but never forget that each individual employee is essential to our success.

If you are planning on printing anything that needs to be food safe, you may have a lot of questions. The laws and regulations can sometimes be confusing, but SunDance has the experience necessary to guide you through the process seamlessly. We stay up-to-date on regulations and innovative techniques that benefit all our customers in the food and drug industries.
SunDance takes the safety of food-safe printing extremely seriously. As one of few printers who specialize in FDA-approved and food-safe printing techniques, SunDance works tirelessly to keep your project safe and compliant. When working on a food, drug or cosmetic job, we exclusively utilize inks and materials approved for that intended use. When a job requires it, we will even set up a dedicated clean room to complete your project.
Legal Requirements and Good Manufacturing Practices
In the United States, food, drug and cosmetic packaging falls under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) laws and regulations. The FDA requires these materials be manufactured under strict safety and cleanliness practices. Packaging must be suitable for every intended use (hot, cold, wet, dry, intended shelf life, distribution considerations and product lifetime). All of these aspects are important to ensure your packaging maintains its effectiveness over the lifetime of your product.
Good Manufacturing Practice regulations assure the identity, strength, quality, and purity of food and drug products by requiring that manufacturers adequately control operation and facility conditions. This includes establishing strong quality management systems, obtaining quality materials, establishing robust operating procedures and maintaining reliable testing. These practices assure that food and drug products meet the necessary quality standards.
FDA-Approved Food-Safe Inks and Coatings
Food-safe inks can be used in a large variety of ways, including labeling, wrapping, in-package inserts, serving trays, napkins, bags and more. These inks are needed in any scenario where the item may come into contact with food, pharmaceutical or medical products. FDA-approved inks, coatings and papers and are deemed safe enough to come in direct contact or even indirect contact with food or drugs. This covers all packaging that comes into contact with the end product.
SunDance offers a wide range of food-safe inks and coatings for use on a variety of food, drug and cosmetic products. We offer both standard CMYK (for 4-color process) food-safe inks, along with custom order spot color options. Our food-safe aqueous coating can be used to protect printed items that come into direct contact with food, such as wrappers, food containers, shelf or tray liners.
Food-Safe Printing Materials
The materials food-safe inks are printed on must also be approved for their specific application. We use FDA-approved papers, specially formulated cardboards, adhesives, plastics and much more to develop a completely food safe end-product. SunDance also has the ability to print on FDA-approved kosher print stocks to create beautiful food and beverage packages, boxes, wrappers or printed containers.
Under FDA guidelines, direct additives are substances that are intended to be consumed in food as ingredients. These include preservatives, flavoring agents, gums and anti-caking agents. Indirect additives are used in the processing, packaging, holding and transporting of food. These additives have no functional effect in the food, but may become components of food or otherwise affect the characteristics of food. Inks and coatings often fit within this definition of food additives.
Good Manufacturing Practices require that the quantity of indirect additive used in a food-safe product is not more than reasonably required to accomplish the intended physical or technical effect. The substance must be of a suitable purity for the intended use and must not impart an adverse taste or odor to a food product.
SunDance has the industry expertise to walk you through the process of creating and producing items using both direct and indirect additives, for a safe and fully compliant end-product.
Clean Room Facilities
SunDance offers a level of flexibility and innovation that you won't find with many other printers. We go above and beyond to ensure that we can execute even your most ambitious projects. In the past, we have created clean room facilities for clients who require strict food-safe environments for specific projects or product lines. See how we worked with one of our food-industry clients to create an FDA-friendly cookbook with food-safe inks and pages you can actually cook with!
Food-Safe and Drug-Safe Packaging
When you need product packaging for anything that comes into contact with food, drugs or medical devices, FDA-approved printing techniques are required. Food safe techniques are required for everything from product wrappers and boxes to outside labels, inserts and more.
SunDance is an industry expert in food-safe packaging manufacturing. Over the years, we've combined our expertise in packaging design, digital printing, and lamination with the latest in food-safe substrates, inks and coatings to produce safe and high-quality food, drug and cosmetic packaging.
Direct Contact vs. Indirect Contact
Direct contact covers anything that has planned contact with a food or drug product, such as a food wrapper, box without an internal bag, paper insert, or anything else the food, drug or device will likely touch.
Indirect contact covers anything that may be close enough to the product to have contact with it. For example, if you have a bagged product in a box, the box would need to be approved for indirect food contact. A tray liner at a fast food restaurant would need to be approved for indirect food contact because a sandwich might be placed on it, or it might be used for ketchup and french fries where the consumer might inadvertently ingest small amounts of the tray liner or its ink.
Product and Packaging Design
Our design team will work with you to create a food-safe package design that works best for your needs and your brand.
