Point-of-Purchase (POP) Displays — These point-of-purchase or point-of-sale (POS) displays are great for short-term use and promotional events. SunDance can produce small runs of POP displays, with quantities as low as one. Graphics are printed onto thick, corrugated board, then die-cut and finished in house, allowing for a quick turnaround time.

Outdoor Signs — SunDance will create custom signs for your store or business using a variety of unique materials—including metal, wood, plastic, glass and more. We utilize engraving, laser die-cutting, specialty inks and more to make your sign truly unique.

  • Drug Safe Packaging for CBD and Cannabis

CBD, Cannabis & Drug Safe Packaging

Packaging in the CBD, Recreation and Medical Marijuana market is extremely important and should be representative of your brand both on the shelf and online. Brand consistency is crucial for establishing credibility and reliability with your product and will shape the customer experience and perception. The specific laws of the jurisdiction where your product is sold may differ and might require different compliance labeling. However, the rules for the types of ink and substrates used in the packaging and contents is regulated by the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) under food and drug safe packaging. Beyond the necessary compliance, SunDance ensures all your printing meets your brand standards while adhering to drug safe packaging regulations. CBD and Marijuana products require considerations for the lifetime of the product, from the packaging plant to the distributor, through shipping, perhaps on a shelf, and beyond to the lifespan of the product in the hands of the consumer. Products like capsules, oils and salves with a longer shelf-life need to maintain their look throughout and maintain a level of brand consistency.

What Exactly is Food and Drug Safe Packaging?

Under the US Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, the FDA regulates food and drug packaging on products sold in the United States. These cover a wide array of safety concerns in the manufacturing process as well as the life of the product. Any packaging coming into direct or indirect contact with food, drugs or medical devices must use approved inks, additives, coatings and substrates.

What Needs To Be Food & Drug Safe?

Everything involved in CBD products, Recreational Marijuana or Medicinal Marijuana products, from the shrinkwrap to the box, labels, bottles, instructions, coupons, literature, etc. which in whole or in part accompany your product should all abide by the FDA standards for food and drug safe printing.

    Indirect Contact v. Direct Contact

Indirect contact is defined by anything that could come close to the product at any point during its manufacturing, distribution, sale or consumption. This could be anything in the manufacturing or bottling process such as labels, safety seals or tearaway shrink sleeves, including anything that holds your product such as the band sleeve, retail box or dispenser, the label on the bottle or anything associated with it. Direct contact is easier to define as it’s anything that will touch the product, such as a bag, container, dosing card, or wrapper.

    Prototyping to Production

SunDance has a number of printing processes under one roof, making it the ideal place to both prototype your products and manufacture the final run. We can even do short runs to get your product to market faster without having to print thousands of them. Beyond that, SunDance is here to produce your packaging on any scale you need. • Texture & Pattern UV Printing

Textured UV Printing with Engraved Rollers

UV printing techniques can create additional dimension and raise the value of any printed piece. When used wisely, it can make elements stand off the page, or give additional texture, transforming the tactile effects of a piece.

Through printing, UV coatings are applied to pieces in a number of ways. Digital UV printing can be done in smaller runs, while inline and finishing processes can handle larger jobs. However, repeated patterns such as linens and scallops, water droplets and orange peels can be applied across an entire piece utilizing an engraved roller system.

The engraved roller or texture roller can be applied inline, meaning on the printing press, to save time and additional finishing processes, or applied later on another machine with various other finishes such as soft touch laminate or varnish knockouts to create something entirely unique.

Engraved texture rollers run much like a standard roller in the process, but apply the pattern in a UV coating to create a 3D effect. When applied, the UV leaves a clear coat in specific areas, leaving the desired pattern. The benefits of using this system range from the speed of application to eliminating or reducing additional processes. Arguably though, the main benefit is standardization, allowing the rollers to be used on small to large jobs without incurring the costs of customization.

This means that the same linen roller pattern used on a well-known hotel chain’s collateral can also be used on a short run of a few thousand business cards or other smaller jobs. This makes the engraved pattern roller system more economical, but also incredibly ecological in that it reduces the need to create multiple dies and the number of applications necessary in a particular run.

UV coatings can range in their clarity, color, texture and even additions. Some have flecks of glitter while others are soft to the touch. Some examples include a piece with soft touch laminate which has high gloss scallops across the piece or another that has soft touch laminate applied in a linen pattern. The options are limitless, giving you a plethora of options in changing the feel and look of a piece.

When creating your next piece, contact SunDance to see what patterned rollers you might be able to include in your design. We can even set up the patterns in small runs for prototyping when necessary, making our print shop a design to production powerhouse.

Contact us today to get more information on the available patterns or to discuss the design of your next project.

  • Geo Mapping

Geo Mapping is the latest innovation in direct mail and an exciting new way to make personalized direct mail pieces even more effective for location-based businesses. Imagine being able to send a bulk mailing to your entire list with a personalized message for each recipient including your nearest location. Now you can.

By using specialized geo-mapping software that runs the mailing list against your locations, and an effective design to properly leverage the dynamic content, a direct mail piece can now include the nearest location with a picture, contact information, hours and even the distance and directions. When you take advantage of distance calculation in geo mapping, it's even possible to create a personalized map on each piece you send out; from your end user, right to the front door of your nearest location. This is a game changer which can only increase response rates.

Variable data used to personalize direct mail pieces has been proven to increase response rates. Including the end user’s name in the piece, their city or other specific information increases the value of the touch point. However, combining that variable data with location-specific results truly unleashes the power of personalization.

This makes it possible for chain and multi-location businesses such as retail, restaurants, services such as automotive, or even healthcare networks to transform every individual piece they mail into a personalized experience, directly connecting with the end user like never before.

From the nearest restaurant to the closest oil change shop or even the nearest emergency medical facility, this additional aspect allows a large run piece to be personalized, providing a better user experience and making concerns about inbound response a thing of the past. Additionally, there’s no longer a need to design for and dedicate large areas of a piece to maps intended to explain your location from the point of view of your entire metro area. Now you can give end users a personalized map from their location.

Even if your business relies on predetermined territories, such as pizza delivery, real estate firms or companies with sales territories, geo mapping can be combined with the territory data to create the same effect, giving the end user the proper location with distance and directions.

Temporary locations such as Realtor listings, seasonal shops and stands, or even one-time events can utilize geo mapping to get the word out about a specific location at exactly the right time. Now every mailbox within a mile or ten miles from your location can receive directions and a map to your location.

The possibilities are actually limitless with the progression of ever-evolving technologies. This includes the ways they are used or in combination with other data or processes. You may very well have an even better way to leverage the technology in your project. Or bring us your project and let us come up with solutions for you. Being on the cutting edge of innovation means experimenting on the path to further honing our craft and the ways we can utilize the latest technology to provide better results for our clients on every mailing.

  • Food & Drug Safe Packaging

The packaging of your product is an important part of the brand of your company and campaigns. The specifics of this are even more important if your packaging falls under the rules of the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) regarding food and drug safe packaging.

SunDance can ensure that all your printing meets your brand standards and any necessary regulations for food safe packaging. Some packaging is food packaging is rather basic, such as a cereal box, while others that will be frozen or could get wet require other considerations, all the while staying safe for the end user and keeping your product looking consistent throughout.

What is Food and Drug Safe Packaging?

In the United States, food and drug packaging are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The regulations and laws cover the safety precautions required in the manufacturing process and approved additives, inks, coatings and materials suitable for direct and indirect contact with food, drugs or medical devices.

    Direct Contact v. Indirect Contact

Direct Contact is seemingly easy to define in that it’s anything that has planned contact, such as a wrapper, a label under the wrapper, a box without a bag, a holding basket in the manufacturing process or anything else where food, drug or device will knowingly touch. Indirect is anywhere that might be close to the product. If you have a bagged product in a box, the box would need to be approved for indirect food contact. A tray liner at a fast food restaurant would need to be approved for indirect food contact because a sandwich might be placed on it, or it might be used for ketchup and french fries where the consumer might inadvertently ingest some of the tray liner or it’s printing ink.

What Needs To Be Food Safe?

The short answer is everything related to food, drugs or medical devices. Everything from the wrapper around your product, the box it comes in, the labels, any bottles, literature, coupons, instructions, etc. that will accompany your product in whole or in part.

    Prototyping to Production

Since SunDance has a number of printing processes under one roof, it is the ideal place to both create prototypes and print the final product. A short digital run of your product can produce the proof of concepts you might need to make that first big sale. After that, we’ll be ready to mass produce them for you. The SunDance team has a long history of product design and prototyping or send us your ready files.

  • Saddle Stitch Binding

    Saddle-Stitched Binding

Saddle-stitched binding is the simplest and most basic booklet binding methods. In the saddle-stitching process, large sheets of paper are folded in half, cut and stapled along the spine for a magazine-like appearance. This type of binding is often used for comic books, product manuals, small catalogs, promotional booklets and show dailies.

    Saddle-StitchingBasics

Saddle stitching is the ideal solution for smaller sized run and jobs—typically with a 64 page count or less. Books with a larger number of pages will be too bulky and won’t lay flat when stitched in this way. Saddle-stitching works best for jobs that require a quick turnaround. Creating a saddle stitched book is more cost-effective than perfect-binding—making it the preferred technique for binding booklets, magazines, reports, programs, brochures, planners and even comic books.

    Why Saddle-Stitching?

The saddle-stitching technique is the binding process of choice when timing is key and a quick turnaround is an absolute necessity. Offering the quickest turnaround time, a saddle-stitched bound book can be produced within hours. This process beats PUR (perfect binding) turnaround times as there is no curing needed—so the job can be turned around in hours, not days.

Here are a few considerations to keep in mind when considering a saddle stitching for your booklet.

    Advantages of Saddle Stitching

    • Quickest binding option available
    • Lowest cost
    • Techniques like gate-fold and fold-outs can be used
    • Ability to self-cover or use a separate cover stock

    Limitations of Saddle Stitching

    • Not designed for long-term, heavy use
    • Limitations on paper variations
    • The spine is not printable
    • Documents larger than 64 pages won’t lay flat
    • Design adjustments for creep is necessary on higher page counts

    Saddle-Stitched v. Perfect Binding

    Saddle Stitching

With this method, sheets are cut, folded, and stapled twice along the spine for a magazine-like appearance. This means that the crossovers easier and more visible. Saddle-stitching works best for booklets of 64 pages or less. This style is ideal for smaller runs, or variable content that needs to be customizedduring the production process.Saddle stitching is ideal for booklets or brochures with a short lifespan, like magazines, small catalogs, event programs, marketing booklets and comic books.

    Perfect binding

With perfect binding, the pages of the book are not folded. Instead they are assembled together and glued along the spine along with the cover. When the adhesive dries—this takes only seconds—the pages are secured firmly in place. With perfect bound books, the crossovers require more attention as they are not completely visible when the book is open.Perfect binding is ideal for pieces that will be used heavily or for a long period of time.

  • Raised UV Coating

    Raised UV Coatings

Raised UV printing, (also referred to as 3D UV or Sculpted UV), is a spot UV technique that builds up the UV coating to create dimension you can both see and feel. Raised UV is completely different from other forms of tactile finishes such as embossing, which presses a design into the paper, and thermography, which has raised ink. Raised UV allows the clear UV coating to be completely independent of ink or pressing a design through both sides of a piece.

    Tactile Printing Effects

Flooded coating has the same feel across the piece. High gloss UV coating feels slick, while soft-touch laminate has a velvety feel. Spot UV printing can leave sections of the paper with a different finish all together. However, when these are combined with additional layers, a piece can become a work of art. Or even a functional piece with braille writing and diagrams for the sight impaired.

    See Samples Here

    Enhancing Graphics with Raised UV

Some of the most amazing uses of Raised UV is in enhancing photography. A football where you can feel the grain of the hide, an iguana where you can feel every scale, droplets of ‘water’ on a beer bottle, or the feel of an orange peel are all possible. Or use it to make your headline actually pop off the paper.

    Hidden and Ghosted Effects

Designers are beginning to use Raised UV to create entire elements of a piece that are not in the actual print. Headlines or design aspects can be done only in the Raised UV coating to make them stand off the paper. This allows a cost-effective piece to feel extremely expensive, adding to the inherent value of your product or campaign.

    Neuroscience

The Neuroscience of touch and haptic response in print is an exciting new area of research. Sappi has put together a great resource for this at sappi.com/neuroscience-of-touch

“In humans touch represents a powerful form of non-verbal communication. Our sense of touch plays a fundamental role in daily life, from learning about objects to communicating with other people.”

    -Dr. David Eagleman

    Designing for Raised UV

Raised UV is not difficult to design. Raised areas are their own layer in your artwork, much like a dieline or fold lines. You can even take your image and modify it in Photoshop to mask everything but the areas you want raised. By lining up your Raised UV layer with the original artwork, you can plan for the final piece and ensure that the additional UV will line up exactly the way you designed it. Give the lines on your picture some texture, give specific materials in your photo a different feel, or just accentuate specific areas to make your piece stand out from the rest.

Raised UV Designer Tips & Tricks

Some best practices to help you in your design development:

    • Submit your mask as an additional layer within your final pdf artwork.
    • Use vector images or high resolution images of at least 300 dpi.
    • Try not to use type under 18pt as it will be lost.
    • Keep Raised UV masks 1/16” or .625” from trim edges, folds, scores or creases.

  • PUR Perfect Binding

    Perfect Binding

There are many choices when it comes to binding your printed project. Whether you need binding for a soft cover book, oversized magazine, photo book, annual report or product catalog, perfect binding is an excellent choice. Perfect bound books are glued together at the spine and generally have a soft cover made from a card stock that is thicker than the interior pages. The term ‘perfect’ comes from the way everything is lined up and cut to be the exact same size.

    New Call-to-action

    Benefits of Perfect Binding:

    Cost Savings

When it comes to book printing, soft-cover paperback books are less expensive to produce than ones with a hard cover. This makes perfect binding a cost-effective solution when you want to create a professional piece at a lower price.

    High Page Count

Perfect bound books allow for a surprisingly high page count—up to XYZ pages.

    Lightweight

If you need to mail your catalog, annual report or perfect bound booklet, the lightweight quality of perfect bound books (as opposed to hardcover) can save you loads in shipping costs.

    Endless Options

Perfect bound books are strong yet flexible, which works well for a variety of projects: magazines, annual reports, portfolios, photo books, graphic novels, workbooks, catalogs, paperbacks and more!

    Professional Appearance

Perfect binding imparts a clean, professional look to anyprinted project.

    Spine Printing

With perfect binding, you can print on the spine of any finished piece that’s at least 1/4 inch thick. This is especially important for novels and other books where printed spines are absolutely essential.

    On-Demand and Short Runs

With SunDance’s on-demand printing solutions, we can produce short runs and lower quantities at an incredibly affordable price.

PUR and EVA Perfect Binding Methods

There are two ways to execute your perfect bound project. You can use either a ‘hot melt’ EVA process or a plastic adhesive PUR process. Both techniques have their own set of unique benefits and limitations.

    EVA (Ethylene Vinyl-Acetate)

This type of binding is a hot-melt process that uses hot glue to create the perfectbound booklets. One of the drawbacks of EVA is that it doesn’t work well for glossy pages. It is also less temperature-stable, and can break down over time. This makes it an economical choice for projects with a shorter shelf-life.

    PUR (Polyurethane Reactive)

This binding process uses a plastic adhesive to createa long-lasting bond. PURbinding is the most durable, but it also takes longer to cure than EVA binding. PUR works exceptionally well with a variety of paper stocks, including photo paper.

PUR binding is the best choice when your book needs to withstand repeated opening and closing, or for any project with a long shelf-life. With this process, you also have less adhesive build-up on the spine, translating to a more attractive end result and a better lay-flat quality. PUR perfect-bound books are the industry standard used by most major magazine and book publishers.

    Tape Binding

Tape binding is now experiencing a resurgence in small-run books, presentation material and stylized perfect-bound booklets. This type of binding imparts a retro look similar to a sewn-spine composition book. Tape bindery is done with a side stitch or perfect bound method where hot tape is applied over the spine of the piece. SunDance offers this tried-and-true finishing design for when you want abold, tactile binding option.

    Pantera Perfect Binder

Our Muller Martini Pantera PUR Adhesive Binder features short set-up and change-over times, making it idealforsmall runs and fast make-readies. Pantera is renowned for its abilitytohandle a large variety of formats and sizes. The Pantera’s PUR adhesive is the industry standard for premium soft cover books, buyers guides, and trade catalogs.
