Designing Cost-effective Direct Mail Pieces

There are lots of ways to reach out to your consumers, but direct mail is still more effective, predictable and trackable than many other mediums. Designing an eye-catching and effective direct mail piece can make a big difference when it comes to your ROI. Of course, some formats can push you over budget on postal costs alone. But with the right information at hand, you can increase your bottom line without breaking the bank.

Through the use of compelling design elements, you can make your direct mail piece more unique and engaging. Think about using specialty printing techniques (UV coating, embossing, opaque inks, foils), specialty papers, thicker stocks, coatings and varnishes to give your mailer an edge over the competition. Experiment with new designs and colors — and don’t be afraid to be playful with your branding. For example, a colorful envelope costs the same to mail as a white envelope, but it can make a much bigger impact. Another option is to find a unique way to get your recipient involved with an interactive element, like scratch offs, scented inks, or stickers.
